With "diamond drag" engraving, you actually "scratch" the surface of the object by pressing firmly down on the spindle which encases the industrial diamond. You then trace the copy which is placed in a sleeve -- this leaves a nice, deep groove which makes the engraving more durable over time. With "laser engraving," the surface is not as deeply-etched and eventually the engraving will fade out. Besides, "diamond drag" engraving is eco-friendly because it is done the old-fashioned way -- by hand. There is no electricity involved in the process.
